Ravings of a Mad Man

NEW-OLD FRIEND
Date:  30 September 1997

I have a new - old friend. I say new because the person I am experiencing is new to me. And, I say old because we were once engaged and living with each other. You might say "How can this be?" Are not two people who do not make it in a relationship supposed to hate each other and avoid each other? We chose to redirect the relationship and work to heal each other as friends while becoming friends.

Can it work? Yes! But, it takes a great deal of honesty from both parties. It takes a desire to learn how to love yourself! It takes a desire to learn how to love someone else. Not just the everyday love that everyone talks about...but, the kind that learns to love without judgment. And that means for yourself as well as for the other person.

Difficult task? It has its moments. But, the moments do not come in regards to my love for her as much as learning to love myself regardless. Just so you know that this does not just happen in one party, enclosed you will find a poem that I recently received from her. It has been a long time since I have received anything as precious or that I cherish as much as this. And, as wordy as I can be sometimes, I could not have written more elegant than this. I would like to share it with you. For those of you that seem to have lost something in your relationship...maybe this will allow you to re-evaluate and grow from what we have experienced.

Unconditional Love

FIRST THERE WAS SPARKS AND FLAMES,
THOSE SOON DIED DOWN TO
EMBERS AND COALS,
THEN CAME THE DAYS OF
UNDERSTANDING AND LOVE,
AS WE GREW
WE GREW APART,
THE FLAMES TURNED COLD
AND SPARKS DID FLY,
SEPERATION WAS DUE
AND WE BOTH DID CRY,
MUCH LEARNING WE DID TOGETHER
WOULD NOT BE FOR NIGH,
FOR THROUGH IT ALL
WE AGAIN STOOD TALL,
AND ONCE ALONE
WE DID LEARN TO HEAL,
THE HEALING WAS LONG
BUT ONCE IT WAS GONE
WE WERE FREE TO LOVE AGAIN,
SOMEHOW THIS TIME
WE LEARNED TO LOVE
OURSELVES,
LOVING OURSELVES
WE WERE THEN SET FREE,

WHEN AGAIN WE MET
IT WAS HARD AT FIRST,
BUT AFTER A WHILE
WE BEGAN TO THIRST,
FOR THE COMPANY OF EACH
OTHER
WE STARTED TO YEARN,
THEN ONCE AGAIN
WE BEGAN TO LEARN,
TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER
SO DEAR AND SO TRUE,
THE SPARKS TURNED TO
GLOWING
AND THE FIRE DOES BURN
FOR DEAR FRIENDS WE HAVE
BECOME
AND THAT IS MORE PRECIOUS
THEN
ONCE WE FIRST WERE.
